A major winter storm has cancelled school buses, closed some schools, and has police urging motorists to avoid travel if possible. The Quinte Region and surrounding area remain under a snowfall warning with another 5 to 10 cm of snow expected by Thursday afternoon. Snow, freezing rain and ice pellets are expected to taper off Thursday afternoon. For those who have to go out today, expect a challenging morning commute, There have been reports of multiple collisions on Highway 401 overnight and it is still slow going out on most roadways.

A Trenton man has been sentenced to a further 36 months in jail on an aggravated assault conviction after a stabbing in early September of last year. Justin Lyons, 38 at the time of the incident, had originally been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was arrested soon after Quinte West OPP found a 34-year-old man with serious stab wounds in a Trenton apartment. Lyons, who was sentenced January 31 in a Belleville courtroom, had been in custody since his arrest and was also given a lifetime weapons prohibition.

Territorial premiers are making the case in Washington that Northern Canada is key to continental security, diplomacy and economic opportunity as Canadian leaders continue their diplomatic push against threatened U.S. tariffs. Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai, Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson and Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok are set to take part in a discussion at the Wilson Center this morning on prospects for collaboration between Canada and the United States in the Arctic. All 13 of Canada’s premiers were in the United States capital Wednesday for the first time in history – part of a diplomatic full-court press against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose steep tariffs on Canadian goods.

A person has driven a vehicle into a group of people in Munich, injuring several, German police said. Police have said at least 20 people were injured but have yet to say if they were hit deliberately. Munich-based Süddeutsche reported that one woman was dead and several hurt, some of them critically. Police said on the social media platform X that the driver had been “secured” at the scene and no longer poses any danger. Regional public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that the people who were hurt were apparently participating in a strike.

A gas explosion at a shopping mall in Taiwan on Thursday killed at least five people and injured several others, according to authorities. Dramatic videos of the explosion in the city of Taichung, on the island’s west coast, showed debris and large panels of a mid-rise building’s exterior blown out as a loud bang is heard. Footage shot by bystanders of the aftermath showed the street below littered with debris and two victims visible on the floor. The blast took place midday on the 12th floor of a popular shopping mall, where a food court was under construction

Canada defenseman Shea Theodore is out for the rest of the 4 Nations Face-Off because of injury, Theodore injured his right wrist or forearm when he got crunched into the glass on a hit by Sweden’s Adrian Kempe in the second period

Alex Bregman and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a $120 million, three-year contract. Bregman can opt out after the 2026 and 2027 seasons to become a free agent again. He might need to shift from third base to second with the Red Sox, who already have All-Star slugger Rafael Devers at the hot corner.
