Belleville’s Loyalist College staff, support staff and students plan to draw attention to provincial funding cuts with a rally on Wednesday afternoon. Craig Jackman an educator at Loyalist said they plan ‘to call out’ the Ford government’s underfunding and privatization of Ontario’s public colleges. Colleges are now facing a financial crisis caused by reduced international student enrollment, he added. Last month, Loyalist College President Mark Kirkpatrick said the college was suspending 30 per cent of its programs and reducing staff levels by 20 per cent, due to underfunding and “significant revenue loss” from international enrolment. The rally comes on the heels of Tuesday night’s Bay of Quinte provincial election debate in Belleville where education issues were a hot topic. They are also calling for immediate bridge funding to help preserve programs and staff, changes to the college funding formula to allow more domestic enrollment and more money invested in full-time faculty and support staff.
