Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the U.S. announcing a one-month pause on tariffs for the auto industry is no breath of fresh air here at home. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the month-long exemption Wednesday, saying the change came after the leaders of America’s “Big 3” carmakers, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, called Trump and asked for tariff relief. She said reciprocal tariffs from the U.S. are still planned to go into effect on April 2, with Ford voicing worries the pause will give Americans more time to gain an advantage in the trade war.
Canada’s participation in U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned “Golden Dome” missile-defence system for North America is limited to research involving the detection of incoming threats, the U.S. commander for NORAD told a defence conference on Wednesday. Gen. Greg Guillot told the annual Conference of Defence Associations Institute annual forum in Ottawa that he and his staff are excited about the proposal, which broadly falls within existing plans to modernize continental defence. Last month during a visit to Washington, Defence Minister Bill Blair acknowledged that Canada was interested in participating in the plan, saying safeguarding the skies “makes sense.”
A magnitude 3.9 earthquake was recorded around 60 kilometres south of Victoria on Wednesday, officials say, in what is the latest quake to be felt in southwest B.C. over the last two weeks. Earthquakes Canada says the quake’s epicentre was in Olympic National Park in Washington state, and it struck around 4:18 p.m. PT. The agency says that there were no reports of damage due to the shaker, and none would be expected. The quake was “lightly felt” in Victoria, according to Earthquakes Canada.
Buffy Sainte-Marie says she has returned her Order of Canada “with a good heart” and reasserts that she never lied about her identity. In her first statement since she was stripped of the award, the singer-songwriter says that she’s an American citizen and holds a U.S. passport, but was adopted as a young adult by a Cree family in Saskatchewan. She told The Canadian Press that she “made it completely clear” she was not Canadian to Rideau Hall, as well as to former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau when he invited her to perform for Queen Elizabeth in 1977. Rideau Hall has not given a reason for terminating her Order of Canada earlier this year. The Governor General’s website says non-Canadians are eligible “if their contributions have brought benefit or honour to Canadians or to Canada.”
