The federal Liberals have increased their lead to nine points over the Conservatives on Day 12 of the federal election campaign. A three-day rolling sample by Nanos Research ending April 2 has Mark Carney’s Liberals at 46 per cent, leading Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, who are at 37 per cent. The New Democratic Party remains at nine per cent, followed by the Bloc Quebecois (six per cent), Green Party of Canada (two per cent) and the People’s Party of Canada (one per cent). The Liberals have also increased their lead by a percentage point in Ontario, with 51 per cent of those surveyed choosing them over the Conservatives, who have fallen a point to 37 per cent.

It’s Day 12 of the federal election campaign, and federal party leaders are expected to address U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs once again. Prime Minister Carney is set to convene a meeting of Canada’s premiers this morning to craft a response. Yesterday, Carney held meetings with his cabinet and other key stakeholders. A source from the Prime Minister’s Office told CTV News that Carney may wait a day before responding to Trump. Carney has paused his campaign as Liberal leader to deal with the tariffs.

The U.S. Senate passed a resolution Wednesday night that would thwart President Donald Trump’s ability to impose tariffs on Canada, delivering a rare rebuke to the president just hours after he unveiled sweeping plans to clamp down on international trade. The Senate voted 51-48 to approve the bill and send it to the House of Representatives, where it is likely to be shelved. In a blow to Trump, four Senate Republicans teamed up with Democrats to advance the legislation. The Democratic-sponsored bill would terminate a national emergency Trump declared on Jan. 22, which he linked to illegal imports of the deadly fentanyl drug from Mexico, Canada and China and used to target Canada with steep new tariffs.

Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Jalen Chatfield could be in hot water with the league’s department of player safety for his take-down on Washington Capitals forward Connor McMichael as the two were engaged in a fight last night. Chatfield swung McMichael over his left leg into the ice after the two squared up in the third period of the Hurricanes’ 5-1 win. Neither player had a helmet on when the incident occurred and McMichael appeared to hit his head on the ice.

Both players appeared to be okay afterwards and were each given five-minute majors and 10-minute misconducts
