Pope Francis, whose 12-year papacy ushered in a more open, welcoming Catholic Church that prioritized empathy for the poor and disenfranchised — including Indigenous victims of Canada’s church-run residential schools — has died at 88. The election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as leader of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013, came about under remarkable circumstances, after Pope Benedict XVI’s surprise resignation. Francis ushered in a number of firsts for a pope: the first from Latin America, the first from the Jesuit order and the first to take the name Francis.

The last Canada Carbon Rebate arrives on Tuesday after Liberal Leader Mark Carney killed the federal consumer price on carbon. Only those who filed their 2024 income taxes electronically by April 2 will receive the payment on Tuesday. Otherwise, the final payment will be deposited once the Canada Revenue Agency assesses their return. The quarterly federal rebate was covered by carbon tax revenues, but the carbon tax on fuel ended April 1.

Twelve people have been killed and 30 others injured in air strikes conducted by the United States on Yemen’s capital, the Houthi rebels have said. The strikes hit Sanaa’s Attan, which has been controlled by the rebel movement since 2014, and a sanitation project in the Asir area.

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth shared details of a March attack on Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis in a message group that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday. The revelations of a second Signal chat raise more questions about Hegseth’s use of an unclassified messaging system to share highly sensitive security details and come at a particularly delicate moment for him, with senior officials ousted from the Pentagon last week as part of an internal leak investigation.
