THE COUNTY WRITES….THE COUNTY READS
From the archives: Anne Preston interviews Kim Thúy, author of RU, the book Anne defended and which won County Reads 2021. Lynn Pickering interviews Grant Hayter-Menzies, author of Woo, the Monkey who Inspired Emily Carr: A Biography. The book was defended by Joan McBride and won County Reads 2020. Randee Dann goes back to Easter 1960 and discovers surprising church attendance, Social Notices from the Picton Gazette and best selling books and popular music of the time.

Monday, April 21
As of April 18, Ontario has reported a total of 925 measles cases in the last 6 months. Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health, South East Health Unit, warns of measles exposure in The County and other locations and who is at risk of contracting this virulent disease. Ryan Williams is running for re-election as Conservative MP for Bay of Quinte. He addresses the platform and priorities for the party and the riding. Terry Culbert posted “A thrilling start to Good Friday.” He describes the aftermath of a military parachute landing in his tree.

The first episode in our 2nd season of World of Wine, with Sommelier Jay Whitely. He and Christy Conte uncork the secrets of how and why winemakers create blended wines, what well known blends are available to us in the County and what we can look forward to when we open up a bottle of blended wine.
Spring migration of birds has started in Prince Edward County! So we are pulling from the archives to repeat a popular interview featuring Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory Manager, Ashley Jensen. We learn which species may visit our backyards in the County and all sorts of nuances about their habitat.
As a follow up, we speak with Ashley’s fellow bird bander, Chris Davidson to learn about the array of bird feeders, bird seed and other ways to encourage songbirds and other species to our backyards in PE

Catelyn Thornton continues her theme of arts and the environment. County Arts in partnership with Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory’s Spring Birding Festival are holding a special workshop on May 11th called “Making Windows Bird Safe”. Catelyn welcomes Stacey Sproule of County Arts, County Landscape Architect, Victoria Taylor and artist, Iris Haussler who will be running the creative and practical workshop. Also joining them will be Nina-Marie Lister, a board member of PEPtBO, a certified bird bander, and Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University in the School of Urban and Regional Planning whose research is in ecological design for coexistence for people, plants and nature while advancing bird safe city design.
