It’s official! May 6th through 13th is 99.3 County FM week in Prince Edward County. And, it’s time for our annual RADIOTHON presented by Lehigh Cement Company.

“It’s hard to believe that we are just coming up to our 4th year on air in October”, says Deb Simpson, General Manager of 99.3 County FM.  “It feels like a lot longer, although most of our volunteers remember those days before we were on air: busy testing equipment, painting and scrounging furniture for the studio. Now, listeners can’t imagine a time when we weren’t on the air providing news, information and entertainment.”

In addition to broadcasting daily information on what is happening in the community, 99.3 County FM responds immediately with critical updates in times of crisis, like last year’s water emergency, or power outages, school closures and other unforeseen events. 99.3 County FM airs over 6,000 community service announcements annually, provides an outlet for local entertainers and musicians and is a venue for artists, authors and craftspeople to discuss their work. Our volunteer, on-air contributors cover a wide variety of topics of interest to residents and visitors alike. Over 100 volunteers work to connect the County  through 99.3 County FM.

99.3 County FM has come to be recognized as an essential service to the County.  However, setting up the station, getting on air and continuing to broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is an expensive proposition.

“While the station is fortunate to raise a portion of revenue through cost effective advertising for local small businesses, without whom we could not exist, we also depend upon donations from the community to remain viable.” says Deb. “To get on the air as soon as possible, we borrowed $150,000 for equipment. Repayment has been a priority, and through generous donations, we have reduced it substantially, but we still have $65,000 to go to retire the loan. The sooner that gets paid off, the sooner we will be able to improve our services to the community.”

The theme of the RADIOTHON is ‘Pay down that loan’ and with the help of donations from the community, the station hopes to take a big bite out of the remaining $65,000. Tax receipted donations are welcome any time, on line at 993countyfm.ca, or at our Cold Storage Road location in the County Farm Centre in Picton, or by phoning the station, at 613-476-2229 to donate by visa or mastercard.

99.3 County FM invites everyone to be a part of this year’s RADIOTHON and to join in the fun. Thanks to the Acoustic Grill, Homegrown musicians are making the RADIOTHON a celebration of sound.  From 8 am until 8 pm, Thursday May 10th to Sunday May 13th, over 60 Homegrown musicians will be donating their time to play on air.  By popular request, we will be replaying our Radio Theatre productions during the County Grapevine following the news at noon. .And,because the RADIOTHON wraps up on Mother’s Day, we have a special promotion: Record a Message for Mom. For $20, listeners can come to the station between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 9 to noon on Saturday to record a 20-second Mother’s Day greeting.  Their Message for Mom will air 3 times on Sunday, May 13th.

Watch for the schedule of events on Facebook (99.3 County FM) and on our website (www.993countyfm.ca), or come to the studio and enjoy the excitement of seeing live radio.

Thanks to Lehigh Cement Company, celebrating 60 years in our community, for presenting the 99.3 County FM Radiothon.
