We’ll start with some good news – a 16 year-old female teen who had been reported missing and last seen in Picton on Saturday evening, has been safely located.
Provincial NDP leader Marit Stiles will be campaigning in Belleville today on behalf of local candidate Amanda Robertson. Stiles is expected to address the recent cuts at Loyalist College at an event at the local riding office on Front Street.
As you likely heard over the weekend, US President Donald Trump is bringing in 25 percent tariffs to Canadian goods starting tomorrow, with a 10 percent tariff on Canadian energy products. In retaliation, the Canadian government is going to introduce 25 percent tariffs on $155b worth of US goods, but in two phases. Beginning Tuesday, tariffs will be introduced on products like orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics and pulp and paper. 21 days later, the Government will expand the list to include passenger vehicles and trucks, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy, recreational vehicles and recreational boats. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said in an interview that the first phase is largely “consumer goods that we would import from the United States for which there is a replacement” from other countries. The federal NDP and Conservatives both urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to recall parliament in order to enact a broad economic plan to help Canadian businesses withstand the trade war.
In a bit of good news, the US is continuing to talk to Canada and Mexico ahead of the implementation of tariffs, and President Trump said last night he would be speaking to both Trudeau and Mexico’s President Claudia Scheinbaum today. It’s also understood that Canada is exploring legal options to halt the tariffs under terms of trade agreements that it holds with the US. China has also indicated that it will be using legal means to block new US tariffs against its imports.
In response to the economic uncertainty, stock markets across Asia tumbled in early morning trading, and it is expected that North American markets will also fall today.
Finally, last night was the 67th annual Grammy awards, honouring music’s best and brightest. Beyonce became the first Black female artist to win Country album of the year for her Cowboy Carter. Chappell Roan won best new artist, and Doechii won for best rap album. The Rolling Stones won for best rock album and Sabrina Carpenter won for best pop vocal album.
Sports
In local hockey action the Wellington Dukes welcomed the Lindsay Muskies to the Duke Dome yesterday afternoon. Cory Jewitt scored the lone goal in the first. Sacha Trudel and Ryan Schaap had markers in the second and Ben Vreugdenhil got a late one in the 3rd to take a 4-3 victory.
The Toronto Raptors continued their winning ways, beating the visiting Los Angeles Clippers 115-108. Seven Raptors had scoring in double digits, lead by RJ Barrett with 20. The victory is Toronto’s 8th in their last 10 games, and with the NBA trade deadline looming this Thursday, it’s now unclear if the team will be buyers, sellers, or stand-pat. Before the game the crowd loudly booed the singing of the US national anthem, as we’ve seen at other events during the weekend.
Back to hockey, the Montreal Victoire beat the New York Sirens 2-1 in PWHL play, thanks to two goals from Marie-Philip Poulin. As we close in on the halfway mark of the season, Montreal tops the standings with a 6 point lead over second place Minnesota.
And, in notable soccer games yesterday, Manchester United lost yet again, this time to Crystal Palace 2-nil, and Arsenal embarrassed Manchester City 5-1.
