Multiple charges, including attempted murder, have been laid against an Ottawa man following a domestic incident in Belleville. Late Friday afternoon, police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at an east-end residence. Police heard the ongoing altercation inside the home upon arrive and forcibly entered the residence. The door had been intentionally barricaded with a couch. A 28-year-old man was initially arrested on charges of uttering threats to cause death, forcible confinement, assault, failing to comply with a probation order and overcoming resistance – choking. Further investigation revealed the suspect attempted to drown the victim, resulting in the attempt murder charge.
A Belleville man has been charged in connection with a Belleville police investigation into numerous incidents of harassment and mischief. Between May 25 and 29, Belleville police received 14 complaints of public mischief, harassment and uttering threats that all appeared to be related. Incidents include over 50 fraudulent requests for taxi services, false food deliveries, fraudulent requests for a tow truck, and posting on social media platforms that individuals were in imminent danger, including being held against their will at gun point at specific locations… that required an immediate police response utilizing extensive police resources. Saturday, police, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit, executed a search warrant at an address in the city’s west end and arrested 26-year-old (Sean Jordan MacDonald). He is charged with public mischief, mischief, criminal harassment and two counts of uttering threats.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday doubling the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent, a move one Canadian industry official warned would have “unrecoverable consequences.” The new rate will take effect at midnight, according to the order. The move deepens the threat against industries in Canada’s two largest provinces: Ontario as a steel-production hub and Quebec is a major global aluminum producer.
The U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) will not give out any aid on Wednesday as it presses Israel to boost civilian safety beyond the perimeter of its distribution sites, a day after dozens of Palestinians seeking aid were killed. The GHF said it has asked the Israeli military to “guide foot traffic in a way that minimizes confusion or escalation risks” near military perimeters; develop clearer guidance for civilians; and enhance training to support civilian safety.
Senior German and Norwegian defence officials say they’re confident Canada will sign on to the ReArm Europe plan in the coming weeks and such a move will make it easier for the Liberal government to buy new submarines from allies. Jasper Wieck, the political director of the German Ministry of Defence, and Norway’s program director of submarines, Capt. (N) Oystein Storebo, spoke with CBC News recently about the pitch for Canada to join their existing partnership, in which the two nations are constructing cutting-edge boats that will begin to enter service in 2028. Competition for the multibillion-dollar defence program is heating up and their remarks come weeks after two South Korean shipyards, in a joint venture, submitted a detailed, unsolicited proposal worth up to $24 billion, to build 12 submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.
