Quinte West City Council has requested that staff put together a report looking into a heritage property tax relief program. This comes following a delegation regarding the Wooler Schoolhouse Project. Originally built as a log cabin, the building located at 62 County Road 5 was renovated and expanded over the years, growing into a small red schoolhouse in 1870 and then expanding again into a three-storey prairie-style building in 1928. The building closed as a schoolhouse in 1966, however, it continued to be used by the community as an event space operated by the Provincial Council for Boy Scouts of Canada up until 2021. In February 2024, the Old Wooler Schoolhouse was designated as a heritage site by the City of Quinte West. In a presentation to council, Bob Lawson, member of Wooler and Area Community Organization, outlined plans to restore the building over the next 12 months so that it can return to being used in the community.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Canada is strongly condemning China after the country executed four Canadians earlier this year. Joly said the Canadians were all dual citizens and faced “charges linked to criminal activities, according to China, linked to drugs.” She said Canada would continue to engage with China and ask for leniency “for other Canadians that are facing a similar situation.” Joly said she and former prime minister Justin Trudeau had personally intervened in the cases of the four citizens who were executed. She said she would not provide more information because the families asked for privacy.
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has struck a deal to buy cybersecurity firm Wiz for $32 billion US in what would be the tech giant’s biggest-ever acquisition, a move which comes at the same time it’s facing a potential breakup of its internet empire. The proposed takeover announced Tuesday is part of Google’s aggressive expansion into cloud computing during an artificial intelligence boom. The frenzy is driving demand for data centres that provide the computing power for AI technology and intensifying the competition in that space among Google and two other tech powerhouses, Microsoft and Amazon. If the all-cash transaction is approved by regulators, Wiz will join Google Cloud. Most of Alphabet’s $350-billion US annual revenue still stems from its search and advertising operations, but with the advent of AI, the cloud division has become a rising star at Google.
