The top story today is of course the ice storm that moved through the region throughout the weekend. Trees were downed throughout Prince Edward County and at various points, practically every Ward lost power – though most has been restored. If you do see a downed powerline, please do not approach. Keep watch around trees that may have been damaged by the storm and any place where ice may have accumulated.

More widely speaking, Hydro One said last night that it could take a few days for all of the roughly 400,000 customers who lost power to have it restored, and some areas, including the City of Peterborough and the District of Muskoka declared states of emergency yesterday because of the damage the ice caused to the areas.

Week two of the Canadian federal election kicks off today, with the Conservatives having spent the weekend battling and bickering over the rocky start to a campaign that has seen an end to their previously-unassailable lead. According to CBC’s poll tracker, which aggregates polls across Canada, and more heavily weights recent data, the Liberals under Mark Carney have a 41.2 to 37.8 percent lead as of yesterday morning, and, if the election were to be held now, would form a majority government. Of course there is just under 4 weeks left of the campaign, with Canadians due to go to the polls on April 28th.

Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump has started to question out loud whether he might attempt a 3rd term as the United States president, something that hasn’t been possible since the 22nd amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1951. The amendment states clearly that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Trump said to NBC News yesterday, “There are methods which you could do it,” though he also said that “it is far too early to think about it.” Trump, who would be 82 at the end of his second term, was asked whether he would want to keep serving in “the toughest job in the country”, to which he replied, “Well, I like working,”.
Finally, the 2025 Juno Awards took place this weekend in Vancouver, celebrating the best and brightest in Canadian music. The televised portion of the event was held last night, and hosted by Vancouver’s own Michael Buble. Winners include: Tate McRae who took home Single, Album, and Artist of the Year, The Beaches, who took home Group of the Year, and Snotty Nose Rez Kids, who took home Rap Album of the Year. You can find a list of all the winners online and 2024 was another excellent year for Canadian music.

The Toronto Maple Leafs blew a two goal lead but managed to rally to beat the Anaheim Ducks last night in California. The Leafs opened the scoring in the first thanks to Max Domi potting his 8th of the campaign. Mitch Marner put home his 23rd in the second, before Leo Carlsson got one back for Anaheim. Sam Colangelo tied the game early in the third, before Steven Orentz tipped the puck past Lukas Dostal at 11.35 of the third.

Three other Canadian teams in action last night. The Jets beat the Canucks 3-1 and the Pens blanked the Sens 1-nothing in overtime thanks to a goal by Sidney Crosby.
For the first time since 2008 and for just the second time ever, the final four at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is all number one seeds. Consensus number 1 Auburn beat Michigan State, Florida beat Texas Tech, Duke beat Alabama, and Houston beat Tennessee. The final four games go next Saturday. In the women’s tournament, we’re down to the Elite Eight. Yesterday South Carolina beat Duke, UCLA beat LSU, and this evening Texas plays TCU and USC plays UConn.

Back to hockey, in the PWHL yesterday, the Toronto Sceptres travelled to Minnesota to face the Frost in an afternoon contest. Minny scored early and scored often, putting two past Sceptres goalie Kristen Campbell before the game was two minutes old. The Frost scored two more in the second and ended with a 5-2 win. With the loss, Toronto remains in second place in the league, with three games remaining before the playoffs.
