Gavin Pretor-Pinney felt that clouds weren’t getting enough respect. So he founded The Cloud Appreciation Society and then wrote a hilarious book, The Cloudspotter’s Guide. According to the book’s introduction, “Clouds are for dreamers. Indeed, all who consider the shapes they see within clouds will save on psychoanalysis bills. Live life with your head in the clouds!” Roz Bound and Rick Zimmerman read excerpts, from the gloom of walking through a stratus cloud (a fancy word for fog) to the drama of a parachutist getting trapped for forty minutes in hail, lightning and overwhelming air currents within a massive thunderstorm. (Spoiler alert: the parachutist lived to tell the tale.)
