Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke edited Black Activist, Black Scientist, Black Icon: The Autobiography of Dr. Howard D. McCurdy. He discusses the many accomplishments of the late trailblazer including founder of the National Black Coalition, second Black Canadian MP and a recipient of many honours including the Order of Canada. Serena Virk, author of We Remember The Black Battalion, describes how she discovered the contributions of the No. 2 Construction Battalion which served during World War I.

OPP Commander John Hatch’s Police Report includes a recent fraud case involving phony lottery winnings plus 2024 County crime stats. Christine Durant of the Prince Edward Learning Centre (PELC) explains how a grant from the Rural Economic Development (RED) fund will assist in developing a workforce training program that will ensure local residents can learn the skills required to work on construction projects in the County.

CONSUMER INFORMATION
There are several properties under municipal care like the Wellington Town Hall. This Tuesday night at the Wellington Community Centre (111 Belleville St.) is the second of two workshops to ‘blue-sky’ ideas for the space moving forward while also letting residents know how the public is consulted when these buildings come under review. One of the community members on The Wellington Town Hall Expression of Interest (EOI) Working Group, Christina Zeidler, comes to our studio to talk about it.
Debra Turrall of Shannonville is a long-time re-enactor of the Revolutionary War, but she’s also a Seamstress of its clothing and other periods. We learn how society throughout the 19th and 20th centuries influenced its fashion and why getting all nuances correct to the time period is so important, right down to the stitch!
After fifty years of owning 59 acres of undeveloped land along the County’s south shore, Ann and Alan Dacombe donated their land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada which preserves our important ecosystems. Jennifer Gagne who works in the not-for-profit’s Conservation Biology Department will talk about this and the unique 1900 acres the Conservancy protects along east coast of Lake Ontario.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ?
Gage Broderick returns with another segment of the voice actor spotlight special, I Know That Voice, featuring another high profile voice actor whose career spans almost 60 years, American actor, Frank Welker. Welker is famous for his over 800 animation roles, but most notably roles such as Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo, Megatron in Transformers, Kermit the Frog, and many, many more. Gage will dive into Welker’s upbringing, career, and impact he has left on the voice acting world.
ARTSCENE
This week, we have a story about a partnership supporting young artists in the county. Pam Carter from the co-op gallery Arts on Main tells how this came about with Shannon Collins and Charlotte Miller from the ROC. They share what’s special about the collective nature of the gallery and describe the resulting exhibition by young artists, called “How You See It”.

Reflections on Lives & Times in Prince Edward County
During Flashback February 99.3 County FM presents a special event at the Macaulay Church Museum, Sat Feb 22nd. It’s a sneak peak at our new series of stories bringing the County’s history to life. Tickets are $15 for adults plus hst/service charge, free for children 12 and under.
