THE COUNTY  WRITES….THE COUNTY READS

Tom Harrison discusses his extensive research which led to the discovery of surprising facts about Vice President Richard Nixon`s visit to Picton in 1957. In Searching for Richard Nixon: Finding Refuge and Making a Home in Prince Edward County, Tom not only recounts events from Nixon`s private and public life but details of his own personal journey. Hear a preview of “The Monkey`s Paw”, a dramatization of the short story which will air on Showtime on County FM March 26 at 9 p.m. Phil Knox describes adapting the story for radio and director Lynn Fennell explains why he believes it’s one of the great horror stories of all time.

TOPICAL ISSUES & CURRENT EVENTS

MEASLES: Ontario is reporting 372 measles cases,  the largest outbreak in 30 years. All 32 cases in Hastings County involve individuals who were not previously immunized against measles. Dr. Sarah Khan is an Infectious Disease Specialist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University. She discusses measles outbreaks in Canada and the United States, who should receive the MMR vaccine and overcoming vaccine hesitancy.

WON’T GO: County resident Vicki Delany is one of Canada’s most prolific and varied crime writers and a national bestseller in the United States. She has written more than fifty books and for 20 years has travelled to industry events in the U.S.. She explains why she now refuses to go. 

WATER WARNING: The headline for Maude Barlow`s op-ed in the Toronto Star of November 16, 2024,  read When Trump comes calling for our water, Canada must be ready. ICYMI: On the Nov. 25th edition of The County Grapevine, the activist and author discussed the fragile state of the country’s water supply and warned that Donald Trump covets Canada’s valuable resource.

CONSUMER INFORMATION

Prince Edward County Council and the Climate Action Plan Working Group are looking for input from County residents through a series of upcoming consultation events.  Albert Paschkowiak, Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor at the County, and Environmental Advisory Committee member Angus Ross will join us to tell us about the Climate Action Plan process and how you can get involved in the upcoming public consultation.

March is Nutrition Month! After speaking with PEFHT Dietician Sarah Sandham last week regarding how nutrition affects our overall health, we go more in depth regarding the connection between nutrition and our mental health. Let’s talk about how depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other conditions are impacted by nutrients with Psychiatrist Dr. Joe Burley and Chef/Nutritionist Rachel Bies.

Watching the ash trees die in Prince Edward County has been devastating. But now there’s a glimmer of hope for the ash tree. Manitoba native Dr. Jill Hamilton is a researcher at Penn State University and she’s been studying western ash trees since before the emerald ash borer hit. It’s giving her unique insights into which trees live (and some do) and which trees die when they’re attacked by the beetle. She will talk to Pamela Stagg about her work and her analysis of the future of the ash tree.

Gage Broderick interviews someone quite close to him; his mother, Mary Broderick. Sister of local musician/celebrity Peter Rea, Mary has had experience in the industries of music, law, customer service, and most recently healthcare. Together they will tell the story of how they went from Canada to the US and back again.

This upcoming talk focuses on Exploring Critical Pathways Between Art and the Natural World. Catelyn speaks with the moderator, Jaiya Gray, as well as artist Stacey Sproule, and landscape architect, Victoria Taylor who are two of the speakers on the panel.

Container Gardening

It’s no secret that digging into County soil is tough! Gardening in a small space and keeping the bunnies away are also tricky. Why not give container gardening a try? Join us this Sunday for an event that’s all about learning the tips and tricks to creating a flexible garden filled with vegetables and flowers that suit you and your needs. Registration is $5, refreshments are provided and everyone will take home seeds for growing in containers.  01:00 pm – 03:00 pm at Bloomfield Town Hall, 289 Main Street, Bloomfield

Art of the Possible: Exploring Critical Pathways Between Art & the Natural World Thurs March 27th 

County Arts’ presents the Art of the Possible speaker series brings together creative minds to explore the power of the arts to innovate & transform our understanding of what’s possible. Join artists Valerie Carew, Laura Millard, Stacey Sproule and Landscape Architect, Victoria Taylor, for a panel discussion on their work around and in service to the natural world at the County Arts Lab from 7:00 pm. – 9:00 pm. Tickets are $25, seating is limited.
